"You will be wearing an Anna Wintour-approved outfit." That's what Tony Awards nominees are sitting by the phone waiting to hear from a Vogue employee, according to Page Six. After Wintour declared last year's Tonys red carpet to be a "disaster" — "How many mermaid fishtail strapless sequin [gowns] can we see?" she said in an interview with Suzy Menkes — the Vogue editor's been tasked by the Tony Awards as a fashion consultant. She's taking charge, and Vogue is even picking up the tab for some of the nominees' looks because only a select few are going to be dressed by Anna. The pretty people, specifically.
Page Six's Michael Riedel writes: "The betting on Broadway is that Wintour will stick with "the pretty people," which is to say slim actresses. I suspect Kelli O’Hara ("The King and I") will get the call, along with Carey Mulligan ("Skylight") and Ruth Wilson ("Constellations")." Riedel wondered how this would play out if nominees have already picked a designer gown.
Some nominees have called in to ask if Vogue plans on helping them out, only to be told: "We are only able to focus on a few nominees." Besides this gossip, Riedel also drops an amazing Anna Wintour factoid: she's been known to keep her sunglasses on while watching Broadway shows.
