The Wonderful and Wonderfully Wacky Hats on Display at Derby Day

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Attendees to the Kentucky Derby live by the motto, go big or go home. So while the jockeys are small, the hats are everything but. Standouts of this year's pack: a horrific doll-encrusted chapeau, actress Sarah Hyland's feathered on floral situation, and Johnny Weir's ro-hawk, as in mohawk made of roses. When wonderful is wacky and wacky is a flamingo attached to a wicker basket made of cherries, all bets are off.
