Louis Vuitton took to Palm Springs for its resort 2016 show Wednesday evening, models snaking around a striking pool at the Bob Hope estate. The show was timed to start at precisely 6:15pm—golden hour in the desert. Designer Nicolas Ghesquière, whose first collection for LV was the not-so-distant fall 2014, had an audience heavy on Young and Cool Tastemakers, including artists like Kanye and Grimes, actresses like Michelle Williams and Selena Gomez, and well-followed fashion figures like Leandra Medine, Emily Weiss, and Miroslava Duma. All those PYTs were dressed in Vuitton, naturally.
On-runway looks moved away from the a-line skirt style Ghesquière has favored, instead featuring floor-grazing dresses, skirts, and wide-leg pants, juxtaposed with colorful micro-shorts. Leather, the house specialty, was present in nearly every ensemble, from a series of cropped jackets to a red, zip-front gown. A Victorian feel rippled through the latter third of the show, with high-neck, full-length gowns featuring long sleeves that flounced from mid-forearm. Footwear stayed tough, with nearly all the girls in sneakers or lug-soled boots. As for bags, models toted trunk-like styles including the Petite Malle in a palm-leaf print, small backpacks carried by the top handle, and clutches with an oversize quilting effect that almost resembled a pineapple's exterior.
