Demi Lovato Made a Funny About Her "I Like Mugs" Interview

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In what was the greatest answer to an inane question since Cheryl Frasier described her perfect date ("I'd have to say April 25th because it's not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket!"), Demi Lovato told a reporter that her favorite "dish" is "a mug." She continued, "Because they're very comfortable in your hand, and they hold hot things that you don't have to touch, so, um, you know, coffee...hot tea..."

She was almost definitely joking, but then, she was almost definitely not joking. According to Demi, she was making a funny, but it doesn't matter. Either way the answer is brilliant. "I like mugs" will go down in the annals of celebrity history as a rallying cry that captures the essence of what it means to be a young star addressing irrelevant question after irrelevant until she's no more than an empty vessel filled with whatever her handlers want, having given every bit of herself away, little by little, so that all may be briefly entertained. Or, you know, everyone will forget it tomorrow when some other Disney graduate says something dumb/brilliant/wonderful/terrible.

Still, Demi ran damage control last night, taking the Instagram photo above — a "mug shot," if you'll allow her a second attempt at a pun. It's a pretty solid play for getting ahead of the conversation, and grinding it all to a halt.

So now, one day, we'll all stumble across the "I like mugs" mug we purchased for $12.99 on Etsy (coming soon, surely), and be like, "I forgot what this is about."
