Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We’re only a few days into 2016 and you’ve already signed up for a gym membership, stocked up on cute new activewear, and vowed to become an all-around better person this year. If your New Year’s resolution also involves upgrading your tired ass wardrobe, then we’ve got you covered.
Thanks to the trickle-down nature of fashion, the newest wave of trends can be found just about anywhere, including your go-to store for cheap basics (H&M), your affordable high-fashion alternative (& Other Stories), and the holy trinity of fast fashion chains (Zara, Topshop, and ASOS). Below, shop the cool pieces that will improve your 2016 wardrobe (and, let's be real, entire year) from the places you’re going to shop at anyway.
Nine to Five
Out with the old, ill-fitting pantsuit you begrudgingly put on for work each morning, and in with the new. If you're looking to switch up your office attire in 2016, consider going the stylish but sensible route. Layer a fun sweater, like the one from Topshop below, over a midi-length patterned dress. Include a nice coat to throw over your shoulders while it's still freezing out, and finish off the look with a no-nonsense heel for comfort and a bag that's just big enough for the essentials.

Cool and Casual
This year, embrace the body parts that are flattering on almost everyone: shoulders. Both Fall 2015 and spring 2016 runways were all about letting your shoulders shine with the help of dresses and blouses seen everywhere from Chloé to Michael Kors. Throw on a pair of super high-waisted jeans from Zara (they're on sale!) and a suede fringed cape if it's a little too cool outside to fully bare arms.

A Chic Night Out
It may be a new year, but let's be honest: Little black dresses never go out of style. Opt for a strapless one (because: see above) with a sweetheart neckline and an asymmetrical hem so you can finally pull off those lace-up boots you got over the holidays. A fringed-loop cardigan like this one from Mango adds a bit of texture, while the gold clutch just screams success and luxury — and who doesn't want either of those things in 2016?
