Virgin Galatic — the first commercial spaceline from Sir Richard Branson —has tapped Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas's brainchild Y-3 to create its exclusive space apparel, according to a Virgin Galatic press release.
The sportswear brand has been brought on to provide flight suits and boots for all future astronauts, pilots, and space shuttle crew. Virgin Galatic unveiled the new uniforms in the Mojave desert, where future Virgin Galatic space voyages will take off from. The result of the collaboration is a sleek and completely black uniform.
Hypebeast got to take a look at the suits first hand and reports that they are more similar to a form-fitting wetsuit than the bulky white spacesuits of the past. The suits are also given subtle Adidas touches, like a set of three velcro straps that hint at the sportswear brand's three stripe logo.
The boots are made using a mix of durable rubber and leather and the insides are lined with Nomex, which is a fire-resistant material used on racing suits.
"Y-3 has a technical know-how and an approach to style which emphasizes the use of advanced fabrics, special techniques and bespoke specifications to ensure fit, comfort and performance," Virgin Galatic's press release reads.
The company also debuted the spacesuits in a dramatic video.
