I’ve got a well-documented love for all things cozy. Which is why it makes zero sense that I don’t already own a pair of soft, warm, well worn-in, perfect slippers.
In a former life, I stayed in hotels pretty often for work, so most of the time I’d take the second pair of poly-wrapped, paper-thin hotel slippers home with me. Hotel slippers aren’t great; they’re thin and usually man-sized and floppy. But they served the purpose of separating my feet from our not-always-swept floor, which is to say they worked.
With all those hotel slip-ons in the trash now (and no travel on my horizon), my current house shoes are a pair of flip-flops that I grabbed from the giveaway bin at work. It’s getting colder, and I can’t wear socks with flip-flops. The slipper situation is becoming dire.
Now that I’ve been mulling over the options for about a week, I’m able to see the real problem here is that I can’t commit. I don’t just want any slippers, I want the perfect slippers. But does that mean Uggs, or Alpaca slippers from Peru? Or maybe I just want the standard fur-lined moccasins? Which house shoes could be worth $60 to $100 of my next paycheck?
That this has kept me from having any slippers at all, is, in a word, stupid. So this morning I pulled the trigger on a pair of $8 Japanese-style house shoes from Muji. Maybe they’re not perfect, but they’re cute, cheap, and they’re going to separate my feet from the floor while allowing me to wear socks.
In case you’re facing a similar plight, or are scoping slippers to give someone as a holiday gift (a classic!), here are all the options that made my “might be perfect” cut. We’ve all probably got more important things to worry about than which slippers to buy. But why face them with freezing cold feet?
