Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
It would be foolish to say anything in fashion is really “out” considering its cyclical tendencies. We’ve welcomed everything from flared jeans to platform boots and the Laguna Beach style of denim skirts back with open arms (all within the last couple of years), so it’s safe to say nothing is gone for good.
But in 2016, we were met with a handful of trends that reigned supreme— from your Instagram feeds to the streets — that we wouldn’t mind saying “see you later” to until (much) further notice. Here, the six trends that we’re taking a serious break from in the new year.
Chokers
This year, we saw the choker in many forms: the simple black cord, the DIY denim strap, and the leather- and diamond-encrusted numbers that landed on the necks of every Kardashian, Jenner, and Hadid. At this point, you might not believe that any other type of necklace exists than the choker. But they do! And it’s time to give them a chance. (Please.)
Tour Merch
So, you went to the [Drake, Justin Bieber, and/or Kanye West] concert this year; or maybe you didn’t, but instead waited upwards of seven hours in a pop-up store line. Either way, obtaining the gear was a notable feat — and you and the other trillion people in line should be proud! — but, we’re honestly merch’d out.
Overt-Athleisure
Ah, athleisure. One of the many fashion buzzwords of recent years that is almost more annoying than the thing itself. Leggings, sport bras, and all of their activewear affiliates became the norm in 2016; head to toe, gym or not. And while there will always be a place for activewear (and even still sport-inspired fashion!), maybe we tone it down in 2017.
Lace-Up Body Suits
Let’s be clear here: Other than when you have to use the bathroom, plain old bodysuits are still good. They’re great for layering, or as this year proved, just as good to wear as a normal top without worrying about constantly tucking everything in. But the particular front lace-up style à la Kim K. has truly been worn to death in 2016, from her celebrity entourage to everyone at the bar you’re going to this weekend.
Cold-Shoulder Tops
Off-the-shoulder? Great! Sexy! Fun! But the cold shoulder — the shirts that just have two holes on the tops of each side — just look like a mistake. If you’re going to expose your shoulders to the outside air, you should probably just go all out. Experimenting is good, but what we learned from this is that a peek-a-boo shoulder is not.
Thrasher Everything
The logo merch from the beloved monthly skateboarding magazine Thrasher somehow made its way from the usual skate crowd to off-duty models and celebrities — like Ryan Gosling, Rihanna, and even three-year-old North West — to just about every other breathing person on the planet. The hoodies and T-shirts were so widespread that earlier this fall, Thrasher editor Jake Phelps called for celebrities and any other “clowns” (a.k.a. posers) to stop wearing the merch as it infringed upon the authenticity of the skating community. If you skate, by all means, wear your Thrasher merch proud. If you don’t, maybe head to the nearest Buffalo Exchange.
