One fitness-related topic that doesn’t get as much attention as it probably should is what underwear, if any, you should be wearing under your gym clothes. Workout-specific underwear does indeed exist, and it makes for a much more pleasant squat or spin session if you’re wearing a good pair.
The key is to buy underwear that’s made from dynamic and breathable fabrics, and a lot of the big athletic brands make just that. To help, we have rounded up some of the best gym-friendly underwear — make some space in your drawers now.
Adidas Climacool Cheekster Underwear ($12)
If you’re a regular HIIT workout lover, this pair from Adidas is a great option, with coverage that’s much like a pair of briefs. They’re made from the registered Ventilated Climacool material that keeps you simultaneously cool and dry, and the double-layer mesh gusset allows the body to breathe freely. Plus, they’re designed with moisture-wicking fabric that eradicates any pesky sweat markings.
Where the Cheekster is ideal for intense sessions, the Adidas Climacool Thong Underwear ($12) is great for something like yoga or Pilates. They’re just as effective, but the thong style will allow for more dynamic movement.
Moving Comfort by Brooks Out-Of-Sight Workout Bikini ($15.99)
While the technical wicking fabric keeps things dry and comfortable, this pair is designed with a sew-free seam that helps to prevent chafing. And because they have an anti-microbial finish and are 74 percent DriLayer nylon (which works as a quick-drying mechanism), it’s possible to squeeze in a few errands after your workout without desperately feeling like you need to shower.
Asics ASX Bikini ($9)
In this case, less is more. The ASX Bikini is a cheap, easy buy for all gym bags. The lightweight seamless fabric provides moisture management and breathability, while the soft gusset keeps everything comfortable and dry.
Patagonia Women's Active Hipster ($24)
These are made from recycled polyester and spandex, which makes them particularly breathable. The price is a little steep, but they’re worth it thanks to a seamless waistband that lays flat and a lightweight single-sided binding in the leg opening that allows air to move in and out without an uncomfortable creeping-up sensation. To top it off, they’re also available in a range of block colors and striped patterns.
Sweaty Betty No Show Briefs ($20)
This pair from Sweaty Betty is made from ultralight sweat-wicking fabric and contains a soft cotton lining. It also boasts bonded seamlines, which means the fabric won’t dig into your skin or show under your leggings. This style in particular is recommended for yoga and Pilates.
