Uniqlo is bringing its successful collaboration with Muslim designer Hana Tajima to the US for the first time. The collection of modest wear launched last year in Southeast Asia and marked an important moment for the designer.
"For Muslim women there was almost a sense of being recognized for the first time," Tajima tells Fashionista. "Then, more generally, to have a different sort of voice, another kind of aesthetic available, was really refreshing."
Now, Tajima is bringing her designs worldwide with an expansive collection of blouses, skirts, dresses, and innerwear that utilizes Uniqlo's Airism technology. The hijabs and headbands in the jacket will particularly benefit from Airism, which will make the items more breathable.
The collection is inspired by Tajima's Japanese heritage and her upbringing in the UK, according to Uniqlo. The result is functional designs that span from conservative — think patternless clothing in colors like beige, navy, white, black, and olive green — to more standout and spring-ready designs, like leafy patterns and pops of sunshine-y yellow and orange.
The collection is also incredibly affordable. Accessories and innerwear start at $10 to $12 and the collection tops out at $60 dresses.
Uniqlo is only the latest brand to target the Muslim market. Dolce & Gabbana recently launched a collection for the "Arab world." DKNY and Mango also offered collections for Ramadan in 2015.
Uniqlo x Hana Tajima will launch in store and online on February 26th.
