Beyoncé, a woman who once hired a documentary crew to record her every move, does not give interviews. She's one of the only celebrities ever to grace the cover of Vogue without sitting down with a journalist. According to the New York Times, she hasn't given a face-to-face interview since sometime between 2013 and 2014, and as of last May, hadn't answered a direct question from a reporter in more than a year. (Naturally, she declined to comment for said Times piece.)
So it's a bit of a big deal when Beyoncé opens her mouth, especially when she's not performing. Back in October, during her most recent magazine cover shoot with Beat, she gave a quickie interview (albeit via email) in which she answered questions like, "Do you Netflix or do you chill?" Her answer: "Netflix and chill."
But with a new song, a performance at the Super Bowl, and a tour on the way, it was only a matter of time before Beyoncé returned to magazines. Last night, Garage teased readers that its forthcoming Issue 10 will feature a selection of Beyoncé portraits by artist Urs Fischer. It also promised something else: Beyoncé speaking.
Specifically, Garage says that the issue will include "exclusive words from Beyoncé herself," a statement that is telling not only because of its vagueness (Were these "words" spoken or more likely, typed? Are they "exclusive" as in "never been spoken in the history of the universe"? Does Beyoncé have her own language?) but because it totally embraces the fact that even the idea of Beyoncé saying anything — and even when readers already assume it's filtered through the entire Beyoncé machine — is enough to sell a magazine.
We won't know the contents of these "exclusive words," however, until the issue comes out (Racked has reached out to Garage as to when that will be and will update when we hear back.) Hopefully, the answer involves more interesting questions this time around.
