There are a couple rules about Celebrity Instagram. First, never turn on your notifications. Second, don't talk about Celebrity Instagram. Selena Gomez broke the second of these rules. During an interview with W Magazine conducted a month and a half ago, she revealed that sometimes, those "shocking!!!!!!" posts aren't really so shocking after all. Shocking, right?
During an segment of the interview that took place at a Chili's, (where she eats with Taylor Swift "all the time"), Selena received a note from her manager asking her to post a teaser photo of her "boyfriend" in the then yet-to-be-released "Hands to Myself" music video.
With a casual dip of a chip into guacamole and queso, she said, "No caption, nothing. Watch — it'll be crazy."
How crazy, exactly? Behold:
Within 12 hours, the post had received 1.2 million "likes" and had become an international story. On Cosmopolitan's website, the next morning: IMPORTANT QUESTION: WHO IS THIS HOT MYSTERY MAN ON SELENA GOMEZ'S INSTAGRAM? The Internet ignited in speculation. Was he her new "bae"? Was Gomez "trolling" Bieber? Her sleuthing fans were quick to reveal the man to be Christopher Mason, a model whom Gomez had turned into a global fetish between bites of guacamole at a chain restaurant in the Midwest.
What Selena Gomez revealed about Celebrity Instagram can actually be distilled into two secrets. First, that curiosity-inducing posts are often initiated by a boring text from their manager, and second, that sometimes, a whole day's worth of internet drama really took place at a Chili's.
