What do Dries Van Noten and Kim Gordon have in common? Both were tasked with whipping up badass leather jackets for Barneys New York. Auctioned by Christies, funds raised will support the LGBT community.
In celebration of its recently opened downtown store in New York, Barneys created "The Black Leather Jacket" auction, a callback to a similar effort Barneys put together in 1986 that sold customized denim jackets to raise money for AIDS charities.
This time around, the department store asked an incredible roster of artists and fashion designers to customize 23 jackets. Alexander Wang, Dries Van Noten, Azzedine Alaia, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Isabel Marant, Joseph Altuzarra, and Tim Coppens pitched in, as did Raf Simons-collaborator Ruby Sterling and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.
There are some truly incredible jackets in the collection, like Van Noten's tribute to Paris, Borna Sammak's lanyard-covered creation, and Alaia's reptilian masterpiece.
Bids start at $1,000—which is less than your basic Acne biker jacket—but if you think you can score one for that, you're dreaming. All proceeds from the auction will benefit The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Center and White Towers, a space for alternative and underserved art.
