New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman has a high-flying hobby. In a profile in March's spring fashion issue of Surface Magazine, Friedman is captured doing what she does on her off-days, taking trapeze lessons at Streb in Williamsburg. It's a little more daring than your average boutique fitness class.
Friedman is so committed to trapeze that she even finds trapeze partners while she's working in Milan or London during fashion week.
Besides her Cirque du Soleil-worthy hidden talent, Friedman describes for Surface how she moved to London on a whim, where she landed a gig as a freelance runway reporter for Elle US, leading to jobs at the Financial Times and NYT.
She also shares her wardrobe workhorses, including jeans by mall retailer Joe Fresh and dresses by Dries Van Noten and Azzedine Alaïa. Those Alaïa dresses are the fashion equivalent of Switzerland, Friedman tells Surface.
"They are amazing for traveling," she said. "Not only are they good for fashion, but all designers love and appreciate him, so you can wear [them] to a show and the designer won’t be offended."
Read Friedman's whole interview here, and the spring fashion issue of Surface Magazine hits newsstands today, March 8th.
