Out of roughly 7.14 billion people on planet earth, the actor and comedian Joel McHale has been selected to host the CFDA Awards on June 6, the trade organization announced Monday. While McHale looks undeniably good in a suit, his prior work on the television programs Community and The Soup doesn't exactly scream fashion man. Therein lies, we assume, at least three of the evening's jokes.
In reality, McHale's randomness isn't all that random — after all, he fits right in with the CFDA's recent streak of hiring funny white dudes like James Corden (2015), John Waters (2014), Andy Cohen (2013), and Seth Meyers (2012) to host the event. And most of the CFDA Awards's past hosts, which also include Fran Lebowitz and Anderson Cooper, have come from the non-fashion worlds of entertainment and media.
In addition to McHale, the CFDA has brought on Jennifer Hudson and Michael C. Hall to perform, with the latter doing a song in honor of the late David Bowie.
Unfortunately for Community fans, McHale's speech won't be aired on live television, as the CFDA had originally hoped: the plan to televise the event got called off last week.
