Gucci has been on fire since Alessandro Michele took over as creative director in early 2015, generating endless media buzz and a big lift in sales (8% in his first year, according to Bloomberg). Consumers (and editors) can't seem to get enough of his quirky, bedazzled, trompe l'oeil designs. In a bid to give the people what they want—and to tap into the brand's rising success—luxury e-commerce site Net-A-Porter has teamed up with the fashion house on a 20-piece, one-off capsule collection, Women's Wear Daily reports.
The online-exclusive collaboration may be a first for Gucci, but such partnerships are becoming a familiar story for Net-A-Porter; the heavy-hitting e-tailer has recently teamed up with brands as diverse as Tiffany & Co. and J.W. Anderson. With Gucci climbing to a consistent position as one of Net-A-Porter's top three best-sellers under Michele, the heritage brand was a natural fit for the strategy.
When the collection drops May 12, expect to see reinterpretations of Gucci classics and a toned-down edit on the eclectic prints, wild colors, and heavy embellishment Michele has become known for. The pieces might be more wearable, but don't expect them to be any more accessible than typical Gucci looks. Prices will range from a whopping $270 for an iPhone case to over 5k for a gown.
