After Beyoncé set the stage on fire (well, at least the part that wasn’t underwater) at the BET Awards in a glorious fringe bodysuit, we thought we’d seen it all. That is, until Janelle Monae took the stage to pay tribute to the late, great Prince with a gorgeous medley, while dressed in some ruffled white lace separates. What appeared to be a classic crop top and flared pants, however, turned out to be so much more.

Partway through her performance of "Kiss," Monae hit a high note, spun around, and bam: hello, backless pants! This was no ordinary stage costume, but a piece of Prince-sanctioned performance art. The Artist himself would be so proud. Watch Monae’s full medley below.
