Statement earrings are one of those street style phenomenons I've secretly admired season after season, while still sticking to my tiny gold huggies or delicate studs.

Browsing Instagram or Tommy Ton's latest photos, I can always count at least a few images of Man Repeller's Leandra Medine or fashion illustrator Jenny Walton traipsing about with heavily bejeweled or tasseled ears.

But I hadn't taken the leap myself until this summer. Emboldened by the variety of playful options out there at the moment, I've decided to tackle the biggest, brightest, and most over-the-top statement earrings I can find — and figure out how to wear them without looking like I raided the costume closet.

There are a few things I've learned in the process.

First, try pulling your hair back. A bare neck keeps things from getting too busy — think of it like a blank canvas for your bold jewelry.

Similarly, less is more when it comes to makeup. Sure, you can still rock a cat eye or a red lip, but with another big, dramatic addition to your face, you may want to go light.

And finally, your don't need to reserve your colorful gems for dressing up or going out. One of the most charming ways to pull of a statement earring is by pairing them with an otherwise low-key look — like the summer uniform of jeans and a T-shirt.

Shop our picks for statement earrings in the gallery above, and see Leandra Medine and Jenny Walton showing you how to make them work below.

Our hotel has about a million mirrors in it, so sorry in advance if I'm late this week!!

I like him so much that a kiss isn't enough I have to suck his cheek off his face like he is my back and I am a suction cup #cupping
