Beyoncé received the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Awards last night. During her acceptance speech, she tipped her (giant) hat to her grandmother, a former seamstress, and mother, who famously designed and made her costumes and gowns during her Destiny's Child days.

And Bey's outfit — a Givenchy pantsuit with sparkly pinstripes — recalled an icon who came before her. This guy:

Michael Jackson wore an almost-identical suit in his 1979 "Rock With You" music video. Whether or not the reference was intentional, Beyoncé has oft noted Jackson's influence on her — most recently at the 2016 Super Bowl, where she also twinned with the late, great musician.

This isn't the first time this particular Givenchy look has been seen out in the wild, however. Bella Hadid wore it in Cannes:

No disrespect to Bella, of course, but it's highly unlikely that Beyoncé knew/cared she'd be sparking a "Who wore it better?" conversation. It's only MJ who matters here.

And while last night's ceremony might have been about honoring fashion's greats, Beyoncé took the opportunity to look towards the future during her speech, and to offer a call to action to the powerful industry leaders in attendance. "We have an opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection," she said. "Soul has no color, no shape, no form. Just like all your work, it goes so far beyond what the eyes can see. You have the power to change perception, to inspire and empower, to show people how to embrace their complications and flaws and see the true beauty that's inside all of us."
