One of the most anticipated parts of fall — second only to parting ways with the central air bill — is wearing clothes you can actually breathe in again. This season introduces and revisits silhouettes that are longer, wider, and more fluid, while still reading refined. And since each of fall’s trends come in endless colors, textures, and patterns, finding the shape is the easy part.

Whether you're shopping for a solitary standout piece or a team player with a subtle edge, these five silhouettes get the job done.

Size-Up Sleeves

Some time not too long ago, we stopped questioning seemingly unrealistic runway trends and decided to take them to the streets. Extra-long sleeves were no exception. Though their varying lengths lead to varying functionality, they’re a low effort way to elevate a look. Just pick one that doesn’t cover your entire hand.

Midi Skirts

The on-again, off-again midi skirt trend is a registered closet staple this season. From Tommy Hilfiger to Tibi to Karen Walker, designers agreed by and large to meet in the middle. The main appeal? The elongated waist paired with the generous length make this flattering silhouette one of the easiest to pull off, with endless styling possibilities. Also, consider this: no pressure to shave above your calf.

Free-Form Frock

When you’re feeling particularly romantic, dramatic, or a healthy balance of the two, these floor sweeping dresses are a really easy option to throw on in the morning. Think less Coachella and more Renaissance revival and you’ll be good.

Cropped Wide-Leg

Cropped wide-leg pants are still in heavy rotation; this season, the shape finds its happy place just above the ankle, often with a flared bottom. From jeans to trousers to jumpsuits, this relaxed-but-sophisticated silhouette adds a thoughtful detail to just about any outfit.

The Cinched Trench

We all know the saying, “you wouldn’t know what you wanted even if it was right in front of you,” and this really couldn’t be anymore true when it comes to fall coats. The trench coat — an outerwear veteran — gets new life this season. Keep the belt tied for an elegant shape via a cinched waist.
