Since everyone is obsessed with those super chunky knit scarves and bulky hats you’re seeing all over Instagram, we decided to see how difficult it would be to actually teach a knitting neophyte to make one from scratch. Catch our instructional video and tips on getting started below.
You will need: A couple balls of Knit Picks Tuff Puff, or any super bulky yarn, and the needles to match. We're using size 15s.
To begin:
1. Cast on around 81 stitches — more if you'd like it to be looser or loop more times, fewer if you'd like it tighter. The odd number is important!
2. Knit one stitch, then purl the next. Repeat all the way around.
3. On the next row, knit all the purls and purl all the knits. This is called seed stitch.
4. Keep going until it's big enough for your liking or you run out of yarn, whichever comes first.
5. Bind off.
A few more tips from our own expert knitter on staff: Try to hold the yarn loose enough that you don't yank it, but tight enough that you don't drop it. Always pick yarn you'll actually want to wear, not just look at. If you mix up your knits and purls, just remember: knits are Vs, purls are dashes.
