Before Lauren Conrad’s perfect wings and Alia Bhatt’s smoldering stare, I like to think my belief in the magic of my favorite eyeliner originated from a love of one thing: comfort. Probably not the first word you’d associate with putting a pointed tip so close to your eyeballs, right? That’s what I thought, too, until I stumbled upon the L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner ($8.95).
Unlike most eye pencils, which tug at the delicate corners of the eyes, this chubby little stick is soft as ice cream and goes on much smoother than most stiletto-skinny liners from other brands. Richly pigmented, this kajal-inspired pencil allows the black color (or brown or gray, whatever you fancy) to settle into your skin seamlessly. Wearing this eyeliner feels like sleeping in on a Sunday, or the way your hair looks when you’ve nowhere to go.
As someone who alternates between the searing hot temperatures of South Asia and the Arctic blasts of New York City winters, I can confidently say this pencil has not only withstood, but flourished in the face of the stickiest humidity and the sharpest gusts. Far from wimpy, this little pencil lasts forever. And the best part? Mistakes are just a smudge away, no cotton ball or makeup remover needed. Oh, and it also comes with a special sharpener.
I’ve been known to run it under a lighter (only for half a nanosecond, I swear!) because, like a really good ice cream sundae, eyeliner — and this one in particular — is best when it’s a little melted and warm.
