Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The first time I remember seeing a celebrity look that I couldn’t live without was at age 9, agape in front of the TV as Lil’ Kim strutted around a color-changing dance floor in a series of loud fur coats (and a fur bikini) rapping about full-length chinchillas and Christian LaCroix.

My desire for a similarly over-the-top coat was quashed at the time by my sensible mother, but rekindled in recent years by avant-garde icons like Rihanna and Iris Apfel. Unfortunately, it was never fully realized thanks to a) my inability to afford/icky feelings about actual fur, and b) the dearth of bright, fun coat options for sizes 12 and above.

But a chance discovery has finally made my dream a possibility: fur designer Shaci’s line of colorful faux furs at Forever 21. The collection includes red, green, and orange shearling- and Mongolian lamb-inspired bombers, toppers, and lined denim jackets; a classic leopard coat; a blush pink vest for the aspiring Elle Woods; and plenty of colorblocking, houndstooth, and windowpane prints for when a single color just won’t do.

Best of all, unlike Shaci’s genuine furs (which can run above $3,000 and top out at a size L), almost all of the F21 pieces are available in sizes S to 3X, with prices ranging from $88 to $125. Scroll down to see for yourself why there’s never been a better time to go with the faux.
