Glossier’s First Perfume Promises to Be the ‘Ultimate Personal Fragrance’

But what does that mean?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Glossier clearly has no plans to slow down. Today, less than a month after the launch of Body Hero, the brand has come out with another category first, a fragrance dubbed Glossier You.

While founder Emily Weiss first teased that a scent was on the horizon at a Top Shelf Live event back in August, the brand officially announced its debut just last week via Instagram, obviously.

The $60, 1.7oz fragrance comes in an ombré pink glass bottle that has a red cap and a grip-like thumbprint carved out of its shape. It’s interesting-looking, to say the least. The brand spent 36 weeks honing in on the arrangement of notes with the help of world-famous perfumers. The resulting mix includes ambrette, ambrox, and musk at the base from a warm and salty scent, and top notes of iris root (earthy, woody) and pink pepper (spice). The goal was a simple, long-lasting scent, or, in the brand’s own words, “a beautiful yet real scent that smells just like you, but better.”

So what does it actually smell like? Honestly, it depends on who you ask. Weiss described the scent in a recent interview with Vogue as a subtle, powdery, musky scent with just a hint of fresh-cut iris. “I want it to smell like your boyfriend’s neck after he has been wearing cologne for eight hours,” she shared.

Reviews from the masses began rolling in as early as last week, thanks to Glossier sending out small samples of the fragrance with every order. While there is some negative feedback floating around on the web — one customer shared on Twitter that they thought the fragrance smelled cheap, like “powdery roses and plastic” — the reviews, unsurprisingly, have been overwhelmingly positive. One customer declared via Into the Gloss comments that it would be her “scent for life,” and that she almost cried when she smelled it.

When we tried Glossier You in the Racked offices, though, let’s just say we were far from tears. Just about everyone gave the fragrance a hard no, myself included. The scent translates way more powdery than it does musky (or a balance of the two), and it comes on a lot stronger than we’d anticipated. (I will admit that had I not fallen in love with the scent of Body Hero, I probably wouldn’t have judged Glossier You quite as hard, but what’s done is done.)

All that said, scent preference can be in the nose of the beholder. If you’ve long been a Glossier fan or are dying to find out how Glossier You smells for yourself, pick up a sample with your next order, or swing by the brand’s showroom to test it out IRL.
