How Many Crystals Were Required for Lady Gaga's Super Bowl Halftime Show?

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If you tuned in to tonight’s Super Bowl Lady Gaga concert, you know that it featured pyrotechnics, aerial ballet, a medley of the pop star’s greatest hits ranging from “Just Dance” to “Bad Romance,” and several seriously impressive swan dives. It also featured crystals. Lots of crystals. How many crystals, exactly?

Take a look at Gaga’s first outfit by Atelier Versace, an embellished leotard paired with matching knee-high boots:

Crazy sparkly, right? But take a closer look at her eyes, which were masked (literally) by more crystals:

Spy something glimmering in the background, too? That’s because all of Gaga’s dancers were wearing coordinating embellished capes:

Perhaps sensing that things weren’t sparkly enough yet, Gaga then threw on this crystal-studded, sequined, spike-shouldered jacket. (Don’t worry, her keytar strap is also covered in crystals.)

Is — is it just me, or does it look like even the people in the crowd are sparklier than normal?

Finally, it was time for a complete costume change. How about some all-over crystallized hot pants and a matching harness for Gaga, along with shimmering shoulder pads and helmets for all her dancers?

And finally, a football-turned-disco ball for the ultimate twinkly touchdown:

Okay, so we don’t know exactly how much sparkly stuff was required for this performance — but suffice it to say that if Lady Gaga really did have a million reasons to quit the show, she probably used just as many crystals to pull it off.
