My affection for Laura Dern runs incredibly deep. Hell, her Jurassic Park character, Ellie Sattler, shaped my entire childhood! As a dorky Floridian first-grader who dreamt of becoming a paleontologist (yes, really), I used to knot all my shirts at the midriff and wear them with high-waisted pleated shorts (again — yes, really) and Timberlands so I could be just like Ellie.
These days, Dern is working with a spiffier wardrobe (think Alaïa dresses and Stella McCartney coats) for her role as the career-driven, confrontative Renata Klein on Big Little Lies. But her off-duty outfits have been similarly enviable as of late, too. On Tuesday, for instance, she cosplayed a very chic grape during her AOL Build taping, pairing a purple pleated Jonathan Cohen skirt with prairie-style Esquivel boots in the same shade.
To be sure, it’s a lot of look — not to mention a lot of suede — but somehow, paired with that black crewneck sweater and Proenza Schouler shoulder bag, it totally works. Consider it further proof that Laura Dern can do no wrong — and that, after all these years, I still want nothing more than to go shopping with her. (Fine, Julianne Moore, you can come too.)
