13 Places to Buy ‘Nude’ Underwear When You’re Not White

Finally, brands are offering more than light beige.

Shopping for so-called “nude” items has long been a source of incredible frustration for me. Most items labeled nude are in fact a specific kind of peachy light beige, aka the skin color of some white people. I’m mixed-race, so this tone doesn’t work for me (or for the majority of the humans on this planet).

But over the past few years, many brands have started making a concerted effort to bring more skin tone options to women of color. Christian Louboutin introduced a collection of “Les Nudes” pumps in 2013, starting with five different colors and still expanding. Black-owned beauty brands continue to provide more options for women of varying skin tones. Even mainstream makeup companies have been steadily upping their selections of nude nail polishes, foundations, concealers, and more. Savvy businesspeople and fed-up shoppers have created their own lines of diverse hosiery and dancewear.

And thankfully, there’s been a huge push to provide more underwear options for women of color, too; here, I’m sharing 13 places to shop for nude underwear that come in more shades than just light beige. Underwear is notoriously hard to shop for in any color, so having this many nude options online — and in this many size ranges — is a win.

BeingU: Entrepreneur Sadia Sisay launched BeingU in 2016, citing her daughter as her main inspiration: “I am determined to ensure she grows up in a world that celebrates women of all shapes, shades and sizes,” she writes on the site. The brand’s products come in five skin tones and a decent range of sizes: The bras go up to an H cup and 44 band, while undies are available in up to a US 14.

Aerie: American Eagle’s intimates line just launched a collection called “Real Me,” which features lightly lined bras, boybriefs, and thongs in six different nude colors. Some of the styles features “tattoos” of messages of self love, which is a little eye roll-y, but realistic nude colors is still pretty impressive for a mall brand.

Nubian Skin: Four skin tones are offered in both lacy and smooth nylon styles, and a page on the website helpfully shares a guide to which popular foundation shade matches each tone offered. Bras are available in A–G cups, with band sizes up to 40; thongs, boy shorts, and bikini briefs go up to size 2XL.

Audrey Olivia: If you’re hunting for bras in larger sizes, try this brand’s nude balconette and deep-plunge bras, which come in band sizes 36 through 42 and cups up to DDD; they come in five shades of a monochrome cheetah print, which is a little more fun than your typical nude bra.

ThirdLove: ThirdLove, a direct-to-consumer brand with a robust try-before-you-buy program, started offering five “naked” shades this past winter. T-shirt, full-coverage, and push-up bras are available in cup sizes AA through G, including signature half-cup sizes, and band sizes range from 28 to 42; thongs, bikinis, and cheekies come in XS to XL.

Torrid: Plus-size clothing site Torrid offers options for women who wear size 10 and up in a range of beige, tan, and brown shades in all kinds of styles, from sweet and lacy to the everyday. Bras come in cups C–DDD, with band sizes from 36 to 48. Thongs and briefs come in Torrid sizes 00–6, which is equivalent to a M–6XL range.

Nude Barre: In addition to tights, this hosiery brand also sells a seamless thong ($19) in sizes small, medium, and large. The thong comes in 12 — yes, 12! — different nude shades.

Nudz: Nudz offers 10 different skin tone shades inspired by well-known celebrities (Scarlett, Sophia, Adriana, Eva, Zoe, Kerry, Gabrielle, Tika, Lupita, and Alek). The brand’s signature convertible strapless bra is available in B–F cups, with band sizes up to 36. All of the underwear is mesh, but comes in different cuts in sizes S–XL.

Hanky Panky: Hanky Panky is known for its lacy thongs that come in every color imaginable, which now includes five nude shades: Cappuccino, Taupe, Chai, Vanilla, and Suntan. The brand’s Signature Lace Original Rise Thong ($20) that’s “one size fits all” actually fits sizes 4–14, but it now offers petite (0–4) and plus-size (14–24) versions, too.

Prima Donna: While Prima Donna has just three skin tone offerings — which are called Toffee, Cream, and Caffe Latte — it’s still worth noting because the brand’s size selection is so great. Bra bands come in 30 to 48, with cup sizes B–J. Full briefs, thongs, high-waist briefs, and hotpants come in sizes XS to 5XL.

Naja: This LA-based eco-conscious underwear company currently offers items in seven different skin tone shades. There’s a lot to choose from: Panty options include briefs, high-waisted briefs, bikinis, thongs, and cheekies in sizes XS–2XL. Nude T-shirt bras are available in A–E cups, with band sizes from 32 to 40.

Spanx: If you’re on the hunt for shapewear, the Skinny Britches® Mid-Thigh Short ($48) comes in four “naked” tones, sizes XS to XL. They’re perfect for wearing under any light-colored dresses and keep everything in place without crushing your organs (too much).

Hanro: Hanro’s cotton thongs, full briefs, briefs, and shorts (up to XL) and bras (up to 38E) are available in five skin shades. Plus, all the underwire bras contain metal hardware that is free of nickel, chrome, and cobalt.
