Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In which former Clemson University superstar quarterback, national champion, and two-time Heisman finalist Deshaun Watson breaks down what he’s wearing on draft day.

I never really thought about my outfit leading up to the draft, but the one thing I knew I wanted to wear were the shoes. I remember watching Donte Fowler, who went to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He had Louboutin shoes on, and I was like “That's what I want.” I still haven’t picked out the exact suit I’m going to wear, but I’m deciding between two and I’m going to go with whichever one matches best with my shoes.

Both suits are from JCPenney’s Collection by Michael Strahan. I’m a big fan; I’ve seen him and a lot of other athletes wearing it. I also customized the lining inside my suit jacket. It's something that's really impactful for me that guided me throughout my life, and it's 815, which is where I'm from: 815 Harrison Square in Gainesville, Georgia.

The final touch is the bow tie. It’s something I’ve gravitated to for a long time and wore to my graduation and award ceremonies. I was watching, I can't remember who it was, but a famous celebrity talk about wearing bow ties. He was talking about what his style means and he said bow ties tell everyone you’re a boss. Bosses wear bow ties.

I like this bow tie because it’s a darker color and has a subtle pattern. It's classier for me and not out there. I don't like anything too bright that's going to make me stand out. I prefer to be in the background.
