Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Functionality is the No. 1 thing I look for in a bag. Also, I gotta look cool — I'm in the airport all the time — but my bags are pretty understated. They're not $60,000 crocodile skin bags that are asking people to steal from you.

Backpacks are actually amazing; mine is a Valentino Camo backpack ($1,995). It's perfect for literally running through airports. It fits a laptop and dopp kit and has an external pouch — plus, it looks kinda cool. I firmly believe backpacks are better for your back.

My favorite carry-on is a leather Tom Ford bag ($4,690). It's my ultimate man bag. This thing is indestructible, and I can throw it over my shoulder. Even though it costs more than my first car, I've had it for three years now and it's my go-to. This bag is a part of me; I've even asked people at Tom Ford to locate it in the archives, but they don't have any more.

I tried other duffles over the years, but they get really messy inside. The Tom Ford one has this extra-large inside pocket that I put my passport wallet in for easy access. I have anxiety attacks when it's too full and you look like a crazy person pulling out everything in your bag to find something at the bottom.
