In just under a year, Yana Sheptovetskaya has totally changed what it means to be a “beauty blogger” in 2017. Her Instagram account, Gelcream, has garnered an impressive following, with a count of nearly 20,000 and only 219 posts to date.

The recipe for its success isn’t complicated. Scroll through, and all you’ll find are photos of buzzy beauty products held up in some good natural light with ad-free, straight-to-the-point reviews in the captions. Gelcream skips over all of the pretentious beauty jargon and reads the way you’d recommend products to a friend — which is why we decided to pick Sheptovetskaya’s brain about what products she swears by in the summer.

Based in Los Angeles, Sheptovetskaya tries anywhere from 10 to 15 new products a week for Gelcream, so if there’s anyone we want to recommend products for higher temps, it’s her. “I am very minimalistic in my routine and don’t like layering too many products,” she shares over email. “So during hot summer days, I prefer the lightest, most functional textures.”

That preference is noticeable throughout her picks, with nothing heavier than a serum making her top five list. Read on to see the products (and why she loves them) below; click the "read more" after each pick to see @gelcream's original review of the product.
