Welcome to Summer Getaways: Your guide to the best day trips outside eight major US cities — and where to shop when you get there. For each starting point, we’ve enlisted the help of a local to tell us where they go when they want to get out of town.
Your guide for getting out of New York City is Summer Miller (@summerdawn), a Brooklyn-based actor (with great style) who formerly worked in fashion. Her destination: Americana Manhasset, a luxury shopping complex in Manhasset, Long Island.
I hate to leave the city at all, but if I have to leave, my favorite day trip is actually to a mall called Americana Manhasset out on Long Island. My boyfriend introduced me to the place; he’s a pretty big client because he runs a consignment business and shops for his own private clients, too.
The shopping complex is really beautiful, and a lot of people in the city don’t know about it. From Brooklyn, where we live, it’s usually a 45 minute drive, depending on traffic. There are a bunch of stores there — it's got everything from Crate and Barrel to all the big luxury brands, like Gucci and Cartier. I love to see brands that I would otherwise only see in their flagship shop in another setting.
I usually check out Zimmermann first, and then browse through Chanel and Céline, which is actually inside this super cool store called Hirshleifers. There’s also a men's market, and a Chrome Hearts — not even Barneys or any New York department store has Chrome Hearts!
But Hirshleifers is the one store that you can't get anywhere else. It’s so cool, and it has everything: The Row, Vetements, Balenciaga, Rosie Assoulin. And the owners, this super cute couple, are amazing. We’ve picked up some cool things there. Last time we visited, I got a pair of Re/Done jeans, and my boyfriend always gravitates toward brands like Fear of God and Rick Owens.
Across the street from Americana Manhasset, there’s an older shopping center with things like Bed Bath & Beyond... and Benihana, that cheesy hibachi place. We love to go there! It’s so funny. We love the fried rice. It's kind of gross in there — there's carpet on the floor. It’s real dirty. But it's so good! It’s a total experience.
If you’re not feeling Benihana, there’s a Cipollini in the shopping complex and an Il Mulino down the street, which is just like the Il Mulinos in Manhattan — upscale Italian food. That’s where I go if I’m already missing the city! —as told to Tanisha Pina
