What to Buy at H&M Right Now

From fall jackets to going-out tops, there’s so much good stuff.

Racked has affiliate partnerships, which do not influence editorial content, though we may earn commissions for products purchased via affiliate links. We also occasionally accept products for research and reviewing purposes. See our ethics policy here.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

There are very few things that feel better than having someone gushing to know where you got your perfect [insert article of clothing here] — especially when you got it at H&M. It means that whatever it is probably looks more expensive than it actually was, and it also confirms that whatever you’re wearing isn’t one of those fast-fashion pieces every single person has (we’re looking at you, Zara off-the-shoulder chambray dress from last summer).

But hitting that sweet spot isn’t always easy. It’s especially hard when you’re shopping online, vulnerable to purchases that only look good on your computer screen. I’ve made it a habit to stop in the store whenever a new collection drops to get a look (and feel) IRL. The newest fall offerings are especially good right now, so I feel obligated to share the intel.

The highlight without a doubt is the sweater selection — one category where H&M honestly never disappoints. (My boss wore one this week that we both once mistook for a $340 version from Acne. Like, actually.) There are soft wool and mohair blends, chunky knits, and easy crewneck options for lazy days. The rest of the top section ranges from classic white tees and thermals to those fun going-out tops that feel “on trend” without being too much.

There’s even a taste of what the brand has for outerwear this year, and there’s enough to satisfy whatever look you’re going for this season. Trendy cropped puffer coat? Classic wool trench? Faux fur? Yes, yes, and yes.

Check out my favorites, which start at just $15, below — consider it a cheat sheet for fishing for more, “Where did you get that?!” compliments.
