Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Somehow I held out on buying a new pair of mules all summer, instead alternating between the way, way past-their-prime pair I bought from Intentionally Blank the spring before last and the now-falling-apart Maryam Nassir Zedah slides I bought at a sample sale in June. But you know what? I still really like the shoe shape, and my vague desire for a new pair has blossomed into a full-fledged yearning, even now that fall is here.

And I don’t think I’m the only one. In our Facebook group for shopping advice, a few others have confessed that they want to buy mules right now, but feel guilty because September is usually the time to buy boots or weather-proof loafers and pumps — not shoes without backs.

But here’s the thing: If you go for a closed toe, especially one with an upper that hits closer to your ankle, you can easily wear them with tights or cute socks through November (and year-round if you live somewhere warm). Plus, you can find some great pairs on sale right now. Below are 10 of the cutest mules out there at the moment, including a handful that are discounted.
