New Ocean’s 8 Trailer Gives Us More Met Gala and More Rihanna

And, more importantly, a glimpse at the dresses each character wears.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

By law, Ocean’s 8 was always going to be a good movie: There’s the A-list ensemble cast, the fact that it takes place at the Met Gala with its plethora of potential cameos, and a whole bunch of diamonds. Even if it ends up being a not-great movie, it’ll still be a good movie. You get it.

Today, however, we got even more hints about the heist that’s about to go down on the first Monday in May. The just-released trailer offers even more insight into the mechanics of the job — there are subtle handoffs, a game of pool, an interrogation led by James Corden(?), and a mysterious selfie stick. More importantly, it also offers a glimpse into the exact dresses our eight leading ladies wear to the Met Gala (Rihanna: silky, red, and off-the-shoulder; Mindy Kaling: a gold sequined capelet; Sarah Paulson: black and modest with power shoulders).

To recap, said cast includes Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the recently paroled convict who’s planning one last heist with a platinum-bobbed Cate Blanchett. They’re after the $150 million diamond necklace of starlet Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway, playing a delightfully more vapid version of herself), but they’ll need the help of a hacker (Rihanna as Nine Ball), a jewelry maker (Kaling), a pickpocket (Awkwafina), a stay-at-home mom (Paulson), and a fashion expert (Helena Bonham Carter).

Ocean’s 8 premieres June 8, 2018.
