The guiding principle behind New York brand Proper Assembly is that style and function shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. Founded in 2014 by longtime friends Becky Shim Paguia and Nate Poekert, the unisex range of backpacks, weekenders, and totes features clever takes on familiar shapes like the duffle and the cinch backpack.
According to Paguia and Poekert, the idea for the line was born out of their own hectic schedules. “We spent a lot of time thinking about the core bags we need in our commuting-heavy lifestyle,” Paguia says. “We really wanted to make bags that were lightweight and utilitarian for carrying around our lives’ needs, while at the same time still being aesthetically pleasing and well-balanced.” —Liza Darwin
