Plenty of brands boast cool-girl cred, but few have generated a buzz quite as loud or as steady as William Okpo. Founded five years ago by New York sisters Darlene and Lizzy Okpo, William Opko has managed to merge their Nigerian roots with a patchwork of American influences via bold, patterned pieces.
The duo’s attention-grabbing designs first caught the eye of Opening Ceremony owners Humberto Leon and Carol Lim in 2010, while Lizzy was working as a sales assistant in the store. Leon and Lim stocked the sisters’ debut fall 2010 collection, and it didn’t take long for word to spread. These days, they count Solange among their fans, and in 2014, they designed a shoe for the singer’s collaboration with Puma.
After half a decade of building their brand, the sisters finally opened their first store at New York’s South Street Seaport this year. “It allows us to do as we please and finally tell the William Okpo story the way we want to tell it,” Lizzy explains. —Liza Darwin
