The Vancouver Aquarium has debuted a new public program, Yoga With the Beluga Whales, wherein members of the public perform hatha yoga while the facility's two belugas watch. Per the Lululemon blog, demand has been high and Aquarium staffers are planning additional classes for more participants.
The idea of practicing yoga in front of confined animals has, not surprisingly, angered a small portion of the local yoga community. The Province reports that around 15 people gathered outside the Aquarium during the beluga yoga class last week to protest in their own way, by doing yoga, waving signs such as "Whale jail = yoga fail" and passing out leaflets. In response, the Aquarium has issued this statement: "We have offered three public yoga sessions at the Vancouver Aquarium. Future sessions have not been confirmed. The Vancouver Aquarium is a non-profit society dedicated to the conservation of aquatic life. All proceeds directly support the Aquarium's conservation, research and education programs."
