Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If you need a hit of pure joy, push play on this video of 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin meeting President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. McLaurin, who was born in 1909 and lives in DC, achieved her dream of visiting the White House and meeting the Obamas. Not only did she meet them, she got them to dance with her too.

She greeted the President with the most enthusiastic "Hi!" possible and then rushed over to Michelle, even as Obama called after her to "slow down."

Then McLaurin, who dressed in a formal little blue suit and did her nails for the occasion, led the President and First Lady in an impromptu dance party. Michelle wore a winter white cap-sleeve dress with an asymmetrical hem.

"I wanna be like you when I grow up," Michelle told McLaurin. "You can," McLaurin said.

McLaurin’s journey to the White House began in 2014, when she began a social media campaign to meet the President and his family.

"And I tell you, I am so happy," she told the Obamas when she met them, saying she never thought she’d live to visit the White House. "A black president. A black wife. And I’m here to celebrate black history. That’s what I’m here for."
