AMA 2015 Best and Worst Dressed: Gwen Stefani's Naked Dress, Gigi Hadid's Breakup Hair

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The American Music Awards is one of those events that isn't quite fancy enough for an evening gown, but not as overtly shock-inducing as the VMAs. This generally means that celebrities are free to wear pretty much anything they damn well please — which they did, to varying outcomes.

There's Ariana Grande's brother's hair stars. There's Selena Gomez's backless dress. There's Gigi Hadid's breakup cut (which turned out to be a wig, though it looks great). There's Gwen Stefani's attempt at breaking the internet. There's a lot happening on the red carpet, and some of it is expected (insert parade of Balmain mini-dresses here), while others less so (someone is dressed as a literal octopus?).

Though the actual awards show doesn't kick off until 8pm, there's two hours worth of red carpet madness to bide the time. Scroll through all the looks above, from Zendaya cosplaying as Barbie to a spectacular flared, floral suit on one Harry Styles.
