A “Make America Great Again” cameo.

We assumed the Grammys red carpet would be a little more political than usual, given celebrities’ recent propensity for speaking out combined with the Grammys’ track record for being the most sartorially adventurous of the awards shows.

But when it comes to fashion on Sunday night, there are few musical stars choosing to make their clothing speak for itself.

One (very viral) exception: this bold “Make America Great Again” dress to kick off the night:

Singer Joy Villa was the proud wearer of the pro-Trump dress, reportedly designed by designer Andre Soriano. One of the first guests on the red carpet, Villa whipped off a dramatic white cape to reveal the dress, which included the president’s campaign slogan down the front and a bedazzled “TRUMP” on the back bottom hem.

Landing somewhere else on the political spectrum, there was the tepid pro-women statement made by a light-up purse carried by singer Skylar Grey. The clutch was flashing messages of “equality” and “empowerment,” Grey said on the red carpet. “It’s my women’s march.”

It was also a piece of #sponcon brought to us by Absolut, which is promoting its new Absolut Lime and is a Grammys sponsor. Grey made sure to mention Absolut Lime while flashing her light-up bag, which just might have distracted from the women’s empowerment message.

Then there was a statement that fell somewhere between impossibly subtle and glaringly obvious, from Katy Perry. The singer performed wearing a white pantsuit, itself a potential nod to Hillary Clinton. She also sported an armband on her right bicep that, if you looked closely, read “PERSIST,” a la Elizabeth Warren.

Then, of course, she topped it off by ending her performance in front of the Constitution.

Of course, not every attempt at incorporating a bigger message into clothing comes across forcefully. It’s a balance several designers are navigating right now over at New York Fashion Week, making things a little more political on their runways than usual. But not everyone feels compelled to make their fashion statements a real statement — nor do the attempts always feel worthwhile.

Remember when Destiny’s Child’s matching outfits felt risqué?

The Grammys may not be as fancy as the Oscars or even the Golden Globes — but when it comes to the red carpet, music’s big night definitely delivers in the drama department. There’s no neckline too plunging and no bejeweled ensemble too blinding for this particular awards show.

And from Michael Jackson to Ciara, Grammys attendees frequently test the limits when it comes to showing off both skin and sparkle. We combed through hundreds of photos and singled out ten of the most (and least) bedazzled and body-baring looks from past red carpets into a single visual matrix, which illustrates just how outrageous Grammys fashion can get:

Things have changed over time: Early-aughts Grammys looks that were considered scandalous at the time — like Jennifer Lopez’s iconic Versace from 2000 or Toni Braxton’s barely-there Richard Tyler from 2001 — seem downright demure compared to what stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé have worn recently. And when it comes to glitter, even the coordinating bedazzled getups Destiny’s Child chose in 2001 can’t challenge Lady Gaga’s comet-like Armani Privé from 2010.

Of course, it’s also possible to make a lasting impact while leaving something to the imagination. Need proof? When Nicki Minaj cosplayed a cardinal in red Versace at the 2012 ceremony (complete with her own pope!), she made headlines. Britney Spears’s white Randolph Duke gown from 2000, while one of the pop star’s most conservative red carpet choices ever, also remains her best.

But the question remains: Will anyone at this Sunday’s Grammys manage to out-sparkle Gaga or out-scandal Ciara? We’ll be watching.

A few educated guesses on what she’ll sing — and wear, of course.

This Sunday night, beloved American singer-songwriter Beyoncé is set to perform at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. It’s been a huge week for the musical superstar, in which she birthed a new fashion collection and announced she will soon be birthing twins. She also happens to be heading into the Grammys with a whopping nine nominations, which makes her not only the most nominated artist this year, but also the most nominated woman in Grammy history.

Of course, Beyoncé loves nothing more than to surprise us (see: 2013’s Beyoncé, 2016’s Lemonade) so there’s no knowing for sure what her performance on Sunday might involve. After a little bit of research and a lot of hopeful speculation, however, I have several educated guesses:

Beyoncé will be performing a Prince tribute. CBS has already shared that this year’s Grammys will include "two unforgettable tribute segments" to Prince and George Michael in honor of the late stars’ musical legacies. Performers and songs are being kept under wraps until the show, but consider this: Prince and Beyoncé have performed together at the Grammys before. Bey covered "The Beautiful Ones" at Glastonbury back in 2011 — and following Prince’s death last year, she organized a "Purple Rain" singalong during her Formation tour. Having her perform a medley of his greatest hits on Grammys night seems like a no-brainer. Plus, imagine the fashion possibilities! It’s been too long since Beyoncé wore purple.

Beyoncé will treat her performance as an extension of her pregnancy announcement. Fans loved the explosion of flowers, underwater shots, and fancy lingerie featured in Bey’s photos (they even rushed to buy both of her $130 bras). I wouldn’t be surprised if the singer incorporated artistic elements from those shots into her Grammys act. As for whether that means she’ll perform nearly nude, perched atop a car, underwater, or simply surrounded by thousands of blooms, I’m not really sure. (Side note: I’m, like, 99.9 percent sure it’s impossible to sing while underwater — but if anyone can find a way, it’s Yoncé.)

Beyoncé will be so reckless when she rocks her Givenchy dress. Okay, this one sort of feels like a given(chy?), considering that Bey has worn designs by Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci for the past five Met Galas, not to mention at this year’s CFDA Awards, throughout her Lemonade videos, and during her Formation tour. But it’s particularly meaningful because last month, Tisci left his post as Givenchy’s creative director after a 12-year tenure. He’s already shared that his final couture pieces for the French label will be worn by celebrities at this month’s Grammys and Oscars — and honestly, there’s no better way to go out with a bang than to go out with a Bey.

Beyoncé will perform "Love Drought" and/or "All Night." So far, she’s sung the following Lemonade tracks live at awards shows: "Freedom" (BET Awards), "Pray You Catch Me," "Hold Up," "Sorry," "Don’t Hurt Yourself," "Formation" (VMAs), and "Daddy Lessons" (CMAs). That leaves "6 Inch," "Love Drought," "Sandcastles," and "All Night." The Weeknd is already performing with Daft Punk, so "6 Inch" probably isn’t going to happen. And according to TMZ, Bey will be "taking it easy" on Sunday’s stage due to her pregnancy, so it’d make sense for her to pick a slow jam. But no way is she going to sing "Sandcastles," Lemonade’s most heartbreaking song, in the wake of last week’s joyous baby news. That leaves the two tracks listed above as possibilities. Personally, I hope she goes for "All Night," both because it’s arguably Lemonade’s most underrated track and because it’d give Beyoncé an opportunity to re-wear that gorgeous Ankara dress from the video.
