Thanks to years and years of back-to-school backpacks, we’re Pavlov-style conditioned to desire a new bag every September. But since a leather handbag is quite a bit pricier than a ripstop nylon rucksack, the investment needs be stylistically adaptable and functionally practical.

Our favorites this season are classic rectangular shapes with interesting hardware. Most importantly, they're put-together enough for work but still fun enough to hang at night.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
