" Lymphedema is a buildup of lymphatic liquid in the interstitial tissue that triggers swelling, most often in the arm( s) and/or leg( s), and also sometimes in other parts of the body. Lymphedema can establish when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired (primary), or when lymph vessels are harmed or lymph nodes removed (additional). There is lots of info on lymphedema. It is either primary or second. Additional lymphedema would certainly be created from something such as a cancer surgical procedure. Mine is additional since my lymph nodes were removed from my upper thigh on one leg throughout my cancer surgery. If the lymphedema is not managed it can end up being elephantitis. Yes, it is an actual clinical condition and it is very severe. There are lymphedema support system throughout the USA. The National Lymphedema Network has plenty of details.
