Suzy Hotrod is the longest-skating member of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby league — meaning she’s had time to nail the best uniform for her unique sport.
The clothing and makeup of roller derby are far more theatrical than those of pretty much any other sport (save for maybe figure skating); Hotrod describes the corsets, skirts, and fishnet stockings she’s worn over the years.
But it’s about function just as much as fashion, as the outfits need to hold up under some serious body slamming. It’s about merging cool aesthetics with the function of athletic clothing, not to mention “athletic-grade” makeup that can withstand a quick water break and more than a few face-plants.
Most of all, though, roller derby fashion is about having fun and letting loose, says Hotrod. “A lot of women really use that space to just do whatever the hell they want.”
